“This is the first pope to visit Iraq, and within three days Iraq was changed, the roads were organized and paved, and the people were happy, and nothing happened during these three days, and people liked him for his simplicity and honesty.”

“He always stood by us, and one time we the Eastern Patriarchs met with him to talk about our struggle and tell him a little bit on our suffering. So, he asked us what do you want? And frankly no one spoke so I had to speak up. I told him we want one thing: to hear us and to respect us. He said to me ‘Capito’, which means understood, thank you and we left. He is very open, and I saw him three months ago in the Vatican, and every time I go there, I take to him dates from Iraq, and he was telling me ‘buono, buono,’ (means this is good), Iraq, I never forget Iraq and the visit. Iraq is in my heart and in my prayer.’”

STORYLINE:
The Patriarch of Chaldean Catholics in Baghdad reacted sadly to the death of Pope Francis.
Louis Raphaël Sako, who was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis on 28 June 2018, told The Associated Press: “Today was the bad news for Christians and for the entire of humanity, because this pope specifically had a deep humanity with a sort of spontaneity and simplicity.”
“This is the first pope to visit Iraq," he said, "and within three days Iraq was changed, the roads were organized and paved, and the people were happy."
Pope Francis died Monday at age 88. The Vatican said Francis suffered a stroke which led to a coma and his heart to fail, as he recovered from a five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia.
History’s first Latin American pontiff charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated many conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change.
Francis recently returned to the Vatican after 38 days in a hospital for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.
He last appeared in public on Sunday with an Easter blessing and popemobile tour through a cheering crowd in St. Peter’s Square. No funeral date has been announced. The next pope is yet to be decided.
