We were worried, we were attentive, there were prayer chains for him when he was very ill, and we thought we would have him with us for a few more years.”

STORYLINE:
On the day of his death in Pope Francis’ hometown, Argentines gathered to pay homage to a man who was known to work closely with the poorest in society.
In the Basilica of the Virgin of Caacupé Pope Francis worked as a priest, forming a close relationship with the poor.
“To the most humble people in Argentina, Francis gave them the conviction to perceive themselves with the dignity God gave them. They matter,” said Father Lorenzo "Toto" de Vedia, a priest at the Basilica of the Virgin of Caacupé.
In the Villa 31 low-income neighborhood sitting in the center of the Buenos Aires, a congregation of homeless people gathered to hear a mass dedicated to the Argentine-born pontiff.
"He gave us back life, hope, faith, and self-confidence" said one young homeless man, Mauricio Augusto Gomez.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away at the age of 88 just one day after delivering his final Easter message from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
