STORYLINE:
Catholic women processed through the streets of the historic Guatemalan town of Antigua on Saturday, bearing a statue of the Virgin of Solitude in a ceremony commemorating Mary’s mourning after the death of her son Jesus.
Other processions in which heavy floats were carried by Catholic faithful occurred in Antigua earlier in the week, but this procession is unusual in that it was women who carried the sacred images.
The women exchanged their usual purple cloaks for black ones and carried the statue, which was carved in the 18th century, from the Church of La Merced.
One of the women in the procession, Andrea Meléndez, explained that carrying the image of the Virgin of Solitude is a “blessing” for her, saying she came “to commemorate with her (Mary) and to suffer with her.
