STORYLINE:
Thousands of Ecuadorian Christians accompanied a statue of Jesus the Almighty in a march through the capital of Quito on Friday.
Cucuruchos – men who wear purple tunics to represent penitence and verónicas, women representing the woman who wiped Jesus’ face with a cloth while he carried his cross, accompanied the image of Jesus the Almighty.
The faithful were stationed on both sides of the streets to be part of the procession.
Susana Panchi who was dressed up as a Veronica said, “I come every year and for 14 years I have been participating here in the procession of Jesus the Almighty in gratitude for my health and for the day by day that He gives me to move forward here in this life.”
“I am asking God to help us, to heal my family. May he help Ecuador to move forward,” said David Abril, who dressed as a cucurucho.
This procession has its beginnings in 1961 was an initiative of the priest Francisco Fernandez, and is held on Good Friday, to remember the death of Jesus.
