STORYLINE:
Russia is ready to play any role in the negotiations between Iran and the United States on a potential nuclear deal, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday after talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi in Moscow.
“We are ready to help, mediate and play any role that, from Iran’s point of view, will be useful and that will be acceptable to the United States,” Lavrov said.
In his opening remarks at the talks Lavrov mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “very pleased” with Thursday’s meeting with Araqchi.
Araqchi replied that the message from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei he conveyed to Putin “is sent as a signal to the whole world that Iran considers Russia its strategic partner and important neighbor.”
“I can confirm that the positions and approaches of Iran and Russia throughout history have never been so close and so similar as today,” he added.
