6. Mid of protesters in New York holding signs reading (English): "Even Harvard has a spine. Cops off campus" and "Strike now"
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Dan (last name not given), New York resident:
"Unfortunately, there seems to be a contradiction between two drives at Columbia, two motivations. The first is the desire, which is honorable, for knowledge, for knowledge, which comes from free expression and free inquiry. Unfortunately, however, in the case of Columbia, that seems to be at odds with the pursuit of prestige and financing. And who suffers? Who suffers from that? You do as students, right? And so does the neighborhood."
8. Mid shot of masked protesters holding signs reading (English): "We outnumber you" and "UAW says: Fight for our future"
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Dan (last name not given), New York resident:
"So many neighbors, that were born and raised here or came here because this neighborhood is so special are feeling locked out of Columbia. That is not sustainable. That is not moral. We oppose that and we join with you in opposing this approach by Columbia. We need to be committed to free inquiry, to free expression, to making sure that Columbia fulfills its mission and lives up to its ethos. Do you agree?"
(Crowd: "Yes!")
10. Various of protesters marching with banners and flags chanting (English): "One, we are the students. Two, we won’t stop fighting. Three, we want divestment, now, now, now, now!"
STORYLINE:
On New York Thursday afternoon, students at Columbia University protested in front of the campus after the university accepted policy changes by the Trump Administration.
The changes included placing the Middle East studies department under supervision, hiring new safety personnel who can make arrests, and banning face masks “for the purposes of concealing one’s identity.” The university also agreed to appoint a senior provost tasked with reviewing several international studies departments’ leadership and curriculum.
Trump has targeted schools accused of tolerating antisemitism amid a wave of pro-Palestinian protests on U.S. campuses last year.
In some high-profile cases, including the detention of Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil, President Donald Trump’s administration has argued it should be allowed to deport noncitizens over involvement in pro-Palestinian activism.
Columbia’s decision drew immediate condemnation from some faculty and free speech groups, who accused the university of caving to President Donald Trump’s largely unprecedented intrusion upon the school’s academic freedom.
