STORYLINE:
Las manos que elaboran las elegantes túnicas que lucen las imponentes imágenes de Jesús y María en las procesiones de Guatemala son de artesanos que, puntada tras puntada, visten la fe de miles de religiosos en Semana Santa.
La Semana Mayor es considerada una de las celebraciones más importantes del catolicismo y conmemora la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo.
La de Guatemala es reconocida internacionalmente y moverá este año, según el gobierno, a 160.000 turistas internacionales, tres millones de nacionales y unos 340 millones de dólares.
Es la única Semana Santa del mundo considerada en su totalidad como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la Unesco, si bien algunas procesiones o tradiciones concretas de esta época del año —de España, Colombia, Venezuela o Suiza— también han recibido ese reconocimiento.
Walter Gutiérrez, catedrático de Historia de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, apunta que sólo hay dos lugares en el mundo en el que viven con el mismo fervor estas celebraciones católicas: uno es Guatemala y el otro, Andalucía, en España.
Una de las procesiones más esperadas en el país centroamericano es la del Viernes Santo, llamado El Santo Entierro, donde María, Virgen de la soledad o Virgen dolorosa, madre de Jesucristo, se presenta en duelo por la muerte de su hijo.
Y este año la figura de la Virgen lucirá un manto y una túnica confeccionados por Alejandro Juárez Toledo, un reconocido artesano guatemalteco que lleva 26 años hilando para esta tradición católica y defiende sus creaciones como un arte.
