"Well, if one year after the outbreak of this intifada we now definitely know that it was planned by Yasser Arafat after the failure at Camp David, the question is: does he feel he has achieved any political results that allow him to cash in and end this violence? We do not discern yet that Mr Arafat has made a strategic decision to end the intifada for a very simple reason – he has accomplished nothing with this violence and unfortunately therefore the violence is continuing as we speak."

STORYLINE:

Security was tight in Jerusalem and the West Bank as Palestinian prepare to remember the first anniversary of the intifada.

Several radical Palestinian groups opposed to compromise with Israel, are planning mass protests on Friday to mark 12 months of fighting which has taken the lives of 647 Palestinians and 177 Israelis.

In East Jerusalem, shops remained closed as the Palestinian Authority declared a general strike on Friday.

The fighting (intifada) erupted on 28 September 2000 when Ariel Sharon, now Israel’s Prime Minister, visited a contested holy site in Jerusalem’s Old City known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Arabs as Haram as-Sharif where the Al-Aqsa mosque is located.
