"Our egg creations this year, we’ve gone for a, well naturally we’ve jumped on the Dubai viral sensation. So previously we haven’t done a filled egg, we’ve always put mini eggs inside our eggs. But this year we’ve opted to fill our eggs with the pistachio, knafeh Dubai-style Easter egg, which is proving to be worth its weight in pistachios. Also, we’re doing a ganache filled egg. So between the two layers of milk chocolate you’ve got this lovely chocolatey ganache, which is really yummy, and we’ve also gone for a praline style egg, so that’s a real chocolate traditional style with lots of nuts, lots of dark chocolate, little glimmers of gold as well just to elevate it."

"Three major reasons why the cacao, the price has increased dramatically the two last years. The harvesting the two last years were not good for different reasons, but the weather was not good and it created a bad harvesting. Secondly, we had not paid enough (to) the cocoa farmers the last decades and they are suffering, and as they are not with the income they need, they are not investing enough in their farm. And so the trees are giving less cocoa beans versus what they gave in the past and what they have to give if the farmers are investing in new trees. And thirdly, and a lot of speculation."

STORYLINE:
Shimmering gold leaf is carefully applied by hand to this dark chocolate praline Easter egg.

It’s one of the seasonal treats created by XO Chocolate London.

Chocolatier Robert Kingdon thinks it’s just what’s needed.

"Gold leaf just adds another layer of quality, beauty, but also texturally as well," explains the company founder.

This year, they are launching a selection of striking luxury Easter eggs.

And one trend in particular has caught their eye.

"This year we’ve opted to fill our eggs with the pistachio, knafeh Dubai-style Easter egg, which is proving to be worth its weight in pistachios," explains Kingdon.

Each egg is lined with pistachio praline and knafeh and retails at £60.

The confection known as “Dubai chocolate” features a crunchy mixture of chocolate, pistachio cream and knafeh, a crispy filo dough that is better known for its use in baklava.

The sweet treats were first introduced in 2021 by startup FIX Dessert Chocolatier in the United Arab Emirates.

They have since grown in popularity, helped by Instagram and TikTok influencers.

XO Chocolate London’s other egg offerings include a ganache filed egg and a praline dark chocolate egg.

"That’s a real chocolate traditional style with lots of nuts, lots of dark chocolate, little touch, little glimmers of gold as well just to elevate it," he adds.

The price of cocoa beans has rocketed in the last 12 months.

Some smaller businesses that sell chocolate are finding it hard to keep up with the surge.

According to Which? research, a not-for-profit UK consumer champion, the price of popular Easter eggs has increased by up to 50%, and some have shrunk in size.

So this year, an Easter treat could cost a little bit more.
