1. SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Gladstone, actor:
"There was nothing about Lee (her character in ‘The Wedding Banquet’) that needed to be indigenous. I talked to Andrew about deepening the significance of wanting to continue her genetic lineage forward, about the significance of wanting to really hold onto the lease to that home. I wanted to deepen both of those narratives for her because it adds another dimension to the whole conversation of this film. The bedrock of this is about chosen family, it’s about inclusivity, it’s love, and all of the communities that are reflected in the film are kind of under attack right now. Always looking to the indigenous people who are the rightful holders of the land that you’re on is a really good place to start and work your way back to. It’s, you know, we’ve survived and we remain a lot of things and it’s, when there’s a chance to include a narrative and to especially include representation where there hasn’t been some, I mean, of course I’m going to take it."
