FSU shooting survivor in ICU begins walking again

Madison Askins was seen walking in the hospital Saturday, days after she collapsed to the ground when she was shot during the deadly Florida State University campus rampage.

The FSU grad student made a full lap around the hospital’s ICU ward with the help of a physical therapist and a walker, her mother Holly Askins told ABC News’ Faith Abubey. Madison had tried walking the day prior, but couldn’t make it without getting sick, her mom added. "Baby steps…progress…but baby steps."

The 23-year-old is facing a second surgery in a few months, according to her mother. Doctors will try to remove the bullet that is still logged in her vertebrae — only if they can manage the risk of potentially leaving her paralyzed.

Askins was one of the six people injured after a gunman opened fire on the Tallahassee campus on Thursday. Two people were killed during the deadly rampage.
