“This is the center of the city, the central part, and yesterday was a big religious holiday. There are religious buildings on both sides of the street where the shelling took place. People were going to worship, so there were a lot of injured and wounded people. Bodies were even lying here in the street. So some of our employees (rescuers) were extinguishing the fires, getting people out of the cars, while others were helping the injured. This was what was done in the first few minutes.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Kateryna Sitak, 23-year-old nanny who trained as a teacher:
“Today, I came to Sumy and immediately went to a toy store and bought two toys because two children died. For me, (deaths of) children are very difficult. I am a primary school teacher by education and a teacher of early childhood. I work as a nanny, and when I found out about all this… it was not supposed to be like that. I used to put toys in children’s hands, to see their shining eyes, smiles, joy, not a black ribbon saying ‘In Memory of the Dead.’ Do you understand? It shouldn’t be like this.”

“The strike hit the center of the city, the missile was an Iskander-M, a high-explosive fragmentation missile, and the speed of this missile is more than two kilometers in one second, so imagine how it can travel 100 kilometers in less than 45 seconds, and yesterday it hit this exact spot."

STORYLINE:
Smoke rose over the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Monday after it was hit by a Russian drone strike.
It happened a day after at least 35 people celebrating Palm Sunday were killed when Russian missiles struck the heart of the city.
It was the second large-scale Russian attack to claim civilian lives in just over a week.
The two ballistic missiles hit an area housing a number of religious buildings, an Emergency Services official said on Monday.
He explained how fire crews had fought to extinguish the shells of burned-out cars among the rubble from damaged buildings.
A day later, emergency crews were still sweeping up chards of glass from the attack site.
Meanwhile, people arrived to lay flowers by a makeshift memorials to commemorate the dead.
Among them was 23-year-old Kateryna Sitak, a nanny who trained as a primary school teacher.
She explained she had bought toys to leave at the memorial to honour the children that were killed in the missile strike.
"It was not supposed to be like that," she said.
"I used to put toys in children’s hands… not a black ribbon saying ‘In Memory of the Dead.’ Do you understand? It shouldn’t be like this,” she added.
