STORYLINE:
The Tunisian town of Hammamet kicked off its 10th international carnival over the weekend, marking the start of the country’s 2025 tourism season.
Performers in bright, colorful costumes paraded through the streets to the beat of drums, dancing and waving to the crowds.
Over 700 artists from Tunisia, European countries, the U.S. and others took part in the Yasmine Hammamet International Carnival, held under the theme "Joy of Life."
The vibrant street performances drew local visitors and foreigners to the northeastern coastal town, known for its beautiful beaches and rich cultural heritage.
"I came from Bizerte, specifically from the village of Ras Jebel. The atmosphere is really beautiful. It is my first time here," said Tunisian visitor Chada Melouli.
Such festivals play an important role in supporting tourism, said Hammamet lawmaker Yassin Mami.
"Hopefully, the initiative will be provided with all the support and financial means, so that it can continue growing year after year," he added.
The event also provides a business opportunity for local artisans, giving them a platform to promote their products.
Chiraz, a local craftswoman who only provided her first name, said the carnival encourages tourists to "discover the local crafts of our country, buy gifts and go back home happy."
