"The reason, we had already explained sufficiently why the martial law had to be declared at the Constitutional Court. We will also explain during this trial why the martial law had to be declared, (why Yoon) had no other choice but to declare the martial law, a power granted by the Constitution. The prosecutors are trying to turn the declaration of martial law to an incitement of insurrection. I believe the proceedings will reveal that there is no concrete evidence to prove the crime itself."

STORYLINE:
Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol denied rebellion charges against him at the first hearing of his criminal trial after the impeachment.
Yoon’s lawyer, Yoon Kap-keun, said after the hearing that he will explain why former President ‘had to declare the martial law, a power granted by the Constitution.’
Yoon is standing trial on rebellion charges, which are punishable by death or life in prison.
Yoon, a conservative who narrowly won the 2022 election, declared martial law on late-night television on Dec. 3 2024, vowing to eradicate “anti-state” liberals whom he accused of abusing their legislative majority to obstruct his agenda.
He also declared a suspension of legislative activities and sent hundreds of troops to surround the National Assembly, but lawmakers still managed to form a quorum and voted to lift martial law just hours after it was imposed.
