STORYLINE:
Thousands of people in Bangladesh on Monday celebrated the traditional new year, the first day of the Bengali calendar, with colorful processions and cultural festivities.
In the capital, Dhaka, people clad in the traditional red attire ushered in the Bengali new year 1432, joining a procession organized by a prominent art college on the Dhaka University campus.
Similar processions and cultural events were organized in other parts of Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 170 million people, has witnessed prolonged political turmoil over the past year, leading to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who was forced to flee last August after weeks of student-led protests.
An interim government under Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has since been in power.
Monday’s peaceful processions were heavily guarded by security.
