STORYLINE:
A few weeks after the Sudanese army regained control of the capital Khartoum, local officials began assessing the damage in a major museum in the city that has stood for decades as a symbol of Sudan’s rich heritage.

Scarred by nearly two years of war, the museum now lies in ruins: its windows shattered, its once-vibrant halls deserted and littered with dirt, debris, sarcophagi and a few empty display cases around.

A mummy coffin lies open, and most of the artifacts representing various Sudanese civilizations across centuries, including golden relics, have been stolen.

“This rebel militia (Rapid Support Forces) has destroyed everything including all what concerns the Sudanese individual and the civilization of the Sudanese people,” Gamal ElDeen Zain al-Abdeen, the Museums and Antiquities officer at the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums, told the Associated Press.

The Sudan National Museum, which sits on the Nile Avenue in Khartoum, is home to the country’s largest artifacts that date to different eras of Sudanese history, including the early Paleolithic period, Napatan (around 750 BC until 270 BC), Meroetic (around 250 BC–450 AD), Christian (around 540 AD to 1504), and the Islamic (around 1,500 to 1880 AD).
