STORYLINE:
Pushing each other, children and adults try to gain a place at the front of the line in a soup kitchen in Khan Younis, Southern Gaza Strip.

Waving their pots to be seen first by the charity workers preparing and distributing the food, dozens of Palestinians gather with the hope to get at least one meal for their families. Not everybody is lucky, the food – mainly rice – is not enough to feed hundreds that daily receive aid and food from the organization.

The situation has exacerbated since March 2, when Israel imposed a blockade on food, fuel and humanitarian aid entering the enclave that has left civilians facing acute shortages.

"Today, we’re cooking in at least 15 pots, which doesn’t meet the needs of these citizens," said Saqer Al-Jammal, a worker in the soup kitchen. "Many citizens are leaving this place without receiving food, due to the increase of (displaced) population here.”

Food is not even available in the market. There are no vegetables, flour, and bread and people have no income to pay the high prices demanded for too little. Bakeries supported by the World Food Program have closed and some UN warehouses where flour was distributed, are now completely empty.

"The situation is very difficult, due to the closure of the crossings," said Mohammad Hasanein, who is displaced from Rafah and now living in Khan Younis. "People’s conditions are deplorable."

Israel has ramped up its offensive in Gaza, trying to pressure Hamas to agree to free the remaining hostages, 59 of whom are still being held, more than half of which are dead.
