Chinese President Xi Jingping has ended his tour of Southeast Asia, having visiting Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam. The visits were aimed at shoring up support as China deals with US President Donald Trump’s trade war.
Beijing has responded to crushing US tariffs with levies of its own on US goods. With Xi refusing to back down, trade tensions remain high. China has signalled it’s ready for the long game, taking steps to support its own economy and cutting off vital minerals to the US.
DW spoke to Alex Capri from the National University of Singapore’s Business School. He told us China was now presenting itself as the reliable, stable partner when it came to trade.
