Militant group Hamas is reviewing an Israeli proposal for a six-week ceasefire in Gaza. The plan, presented by the mediators Egypt and Qatar, would see a pause in the fighting, the return of hostages and the release of Palestinian prisoners. But the key Israeli condition that Hamas lay down its weapons has previously been a red line for the militant group. Since Israel restarted its military offensive last month, effectively putting an end to the last ceasefire deal, Israeli forces have killed more than 1,500 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.
