STORYLINE:
The ongoing Ukraine conflict is not being discussed at Russia-U.S. talks in Istanbul, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Thursday.
“These are negotiations between the (Russian) Foreign Ministry and the (U.S.) State Department exclusively on issues of settlement and normalization of bilateral relations,” Peskov said, adding that no time frames had been set for possible ceasefire talks.
“There is an understanding that everyone is interested in a speedy (Ukraine) settlement, but with the interests of the parties respected. For us, this is, first of all, respecting our own interests, the interests of the Russian Federation,” Peskov said.
The meeting between diplomats from Russia and the United States on relations between Moscow and Washington started in Istanbul on Thursday.
During previous Russia-U.S. talks in Saudi Arabia in February, the two countries agreed to start working on improving their diplomatic and economic ties, including restoring the staffing at embassies, which in recent years were hit hard by mutual expulsions of large numbers of diplomats and other restrictions.
