"I keep going back to a line that Avi Lerner, who is one of the top foreign sales people says in ‘Seduced and Abandoned,’ where he’s talking about the worth of Alec and Nev in a movie being about four or five million dollars in a movie talking about name value, but an actress who would elevate the budget and mean that he would give us more money to make a movie is, as he puts it, ‘what’s her name Natalie Portman?’ And it’s entirely unconscious obviously, but why does he call her ‘what’s her name Natalie Portman?’ as opposed to Natalie Portman? Because he knows that a year from now, two years from now, it’ll be ‘what’s her name’ somebody else and Natalie Portman will be not worth anything, not worth a film. It’s such an illegitimate kind of flux that we’re in, that the assumption that any name really means anything is a kind of convenience so that people can move ahead and decide that they have to spend money. "

STORYLINE:
A New York jury on Wednesday awarded $1.68 billion in damages to 40 women who accused writer and director James Toback of sexual abuse and other crimes over a span of 35 years, according to lawyers representing the plaintiffs.
The decision stems from a lawsuit filed in Manhattan in 2022 after New York state instituted a one-year window for people to file lawsuits over sexual assault claims even if they took place decades ago.
It marks one of the largest jury awards since the advent of the #MeToo movement, as well as in New York state history, said attorney Brad Beckworth, of the law firm Nix Patterson LLP, in an interview. The plaintiffs, he said, believe such a large verdict will send a message to powerful individuals “who don’t treat women appropriately.”
