“Right now, it’s just like this: we don’t know which way to go on anything that’s going to be happening. We do know what’s there; we do know the tariffs have been placed in; we do know that this is going to impact us. Now, what’s going to happen on the side from our government, we don’t know.”

“We buy more seeds this time than we did last year, yes, because of what was being talked about. So, we’ve started putting more things in our toolbox that we’re going to have to use to continue or to be able to survive. But every cost is going to go higher.”

STORYLINE:
CEO Cindy Ayers Elliot built Foot Print Farms to provide healthy, accessible food to the Jackson, MS community. Now, with tariffs poised to increase her operating costs, she is reluctantly preparing to raise prices for her customers.

“To have to pass on more costs, it’s not an easy thing to do," Ayers Elliot said.
"We’re looking at: how do we make sure, and we’ve always done this, that we are making a profit but we’re not gouging.”

Ayers Elliot said many of the products she uses on the farm are either manufactured in other countries or have components from overseas.

"You think about fertilizer; you think about the nutrients that comes in for the farmlands; you think about the equipment that you use: where is it made and where is it coming in from?" she said.

To prepare for the impact of tariffs, Ayers Elliot is buying materials now in hopes of avoiding higher costs in the future.

She said she and some fellow farmers are on high-alert, waiting to see how tariffs with impact their businesses and how the federal government will respond in turn.
