++BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++

Washington – 8 April 2025
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. James Lankford, (R) Oklahoma:
“Well, the market seems to be stabilizing somewhat, but I think there’s still a lot of questions about the negotiation that’s out there. President Trump’s been pretty clear, hey, I want to get reciprocal trade agreements. I want them to be fair across the world. Every American and all businesses want them to be a fair trade agreements across the world. And so, the press right now is to be able to know how many negotiations can they do simultaneously to be able to have other countries to be able to come to the table and say these are barriers we’ve had against the United States for sometimes decades. If we have the opportunity to be able to clear those out, this is a great moment to be able to clear those out and to be able to reset our trade agreements worldwide.”
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Todd Young, (R) Indiana:
“I think Congress should play a meaningful role when it comes to developing revenue measures, whether it’s taxes or tariffs. I think the President needs broad discretion to be able to enforce whatever Congress develops and implements. And so, I actually have been working with the administration to give them more tools to implement existing tariff laws.”
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Kennedy, (R) Louisiana:
“I hope he negotiates zero tariffs with as many of them as we can. Europe’s offering zero trade barriers, I’ll take a dozen. Taiwan, I will take a dozen. Vietnam’s offering zero trade barriers I’ll take a dozen. I hope Prime Minister Carney in Canada does it. But I don’t know what the President’s going to do. I don’t know what’s in his head. I think I know what’s in his heart, but I don’t know what is in his head. But I know, if I were king for a day, I’m not, I don’t aspire to be, I would pounce on these zero tariff deals like a ninja.”
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Cornyn, (R) Texas:
“If the goal is zero tariffs and truly free trade, I think that’s a huge win for the President Trump.”
(Reporter: What about higher prices?”
“Well I think any time you’re going to have a change in the status quo, there’s going to be some disruption by definition, but I think how this story ends is the most important thing, and hopefully it ends quickly.”

The White House is sending mixed messages on tariffs as it pursues conflicting goals, frustrating foreign leaders and business executives who are desperate for clarity on a generational overhaul of international trade.

Republican Senators on Capitol Hill Tuesday responded to concerns over tariffs and volatile markets.

Sen. James Lankford, (R) Oklahoma, says while the market stabilized somewhat early Tuesday, questions remained about tariff negotiations.

Sen. John Kennedy, (R), says he hopes the president negotiates zero tariffs with as many countries as possible.

“I don’t know what’s in his head. I think I know what’s in his heart, but I don’t know what is in his head. But I know, if I were king for a day, I’m not, I don’t aspire to be, I would pounce on these zero tariff deals like a ninja,” Kennedy said.
