Today, we came peacefully and without causing harm because we are the builders of society and of future generations, God willing. We have identified and written down our demands and sent copies to the House of Representatives and the prime minister’s office."

"Our demands are clear and we’ve mentioned them before. First, (education) staff are deprived of their basic rights, especially land plots and adequate salaries. Second, we’ve been on contracts from 2014 to 2020, and we want to be made permanent staff."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Iraqi teachers taking part in a strike rallied in Baghdad and other cities across the country to demand better pay and improved living conditions.

Police in the Iraqi capital blocked streets around the protest site as demonstrators chanted and called for the strike to continue until their demands are met.

"We have identified and written down our demands and sent copies to the House of Representatives and the prime minister’s office," said Ahmad al-Tayib, one of the protest organizers.

Other rallies were held in different parts of Iraq, including in the city of Nasiriyah in the country’s south.

The protesters in Nasiriyah clashed with security forces and several teachers were injured, according to local media.
