STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday called on the U.S. to discard “threat of force and extreme pressure” on the Iranian nuclear issue as the U.S. and Iran are set to hold talks starting Saturday.
President Donald Trump said Monday the U.S. will hold direct talks with Iran about its nuclear program, while warning the Iranians they would be in “great danger” if the talks don’t succeed in persuading them to abandon their nuclear weapons program.
For its part, Tehran confirmed talks would happen but insisted they would be indirect discussions through a mediator.
The difference may seem small, but it matters. Indirect talks have made no progress since Trump in his first term unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018.
Asked about the latest development at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed again the importance of dialogue to address the issue.
Lin noted that the U.S. should show “political sincerity” and engage in dialogue in the spirit of “mutual trust,” citing its unilateral withdrawal from the pact in 2018.
Lin also defended China’s cooperation with Argentina after the U.S. reportedly pressured the country to scrap a currency swap accord with China.

Calling the pact “extortionate” during his speech at Miami Dade College last Thursday, Mauricio Claver Carone, Trump’s special envoy for Latin America, said the U.S. hoped Argentina could distance itself from China by severing the deal or the U.S. could withdraw its support for the country’s ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) negotiations.
