5. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Tajani, Italian Foreign Minister:
"We are friends of Israel. We are against the attack against Israel. Very good reaction on defense. But this is a victory for Israel. Now we need to work hard for the de-escalation. Why aren’t there any pause for the victory? Because after the victory, it’s possible to stay calm. During the G7, under the Italian presidency, three days ago, the G7 in those days said the governments decided to send a clear message. We condemn Iran. But now it is better to stop."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Tajani, Italian Foreign Minister:
(on using Frozen Russian Assets to help Ukraine)
"Absolutely. I am in favor, we are in favor. But we need to study the legal basis, because the danger is to send money, and then if it is impossible to do it then that is not (unintelligible) for us, also for our image. Before we need to study legal basis, and then to decide, in principle I am totally in favor."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Tajani, Italian Foreign Minister:
"We prefer to stop because we need to work in favor of de-escalation, because escalation will be a disaster for everybody. But this is important to strengthen Israel. Our goal is to have two people, two states. But for this we need to have a cease-fire, for starting with the dialogue."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Tajani, Italian Foreign Minister:
"I think it’s important to back Ukraine in this moment, because if we want to achieve peace, we need to have a position without the defeat of the Ukrainian army. The defeat of the Ukrainian army is not a good solution if you want to achieve peace. For it to be possible to to work for an agreement for peace, we need to have a position, not a defeat. For this, it is important to back also at the military level with weapons. That the problem is their defense in Ukraine they want Patriots (air defence system). But Italy, we don’t have Patriots for this. And probably we need an American decision. But I think it is important for me that we have a positive decision by the (US) Congress" (referring to US Congress approving 60 billion dollars in military aid to Ukraine)."

STORYLINE:
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged restrain and de-escalation in Middle East as the group of Seven foreign ministers are meeting on the Italian resort island of Capri.
Under Italy’s rotating stewardship, the G7 leaders are expected to issue a united call for Israel to exercise restraint after Iran’s unprecedented weekend attack involving hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles fired toward the Jewish state.
Tajani told The Associated Press that his country supports a two-state solution, but the priority for now is to support a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war.
With Israel’s war in Gaza in its sixth month, Tehran’s attack added a new element of urgency to the three-day meeting of foreign ministers from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.
Russia’s two-year military operation in Ukraine is also high on the agenda, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg invited to the Capri meeting on Thursday as guests.
