“This is the worst street that I’ve seen so far in our city. Yeah, it’s very frustrating seeing this. Any water in our streets, standing water, is frustrating. And we’re doing everything we can to work with Wayne County, our state, and also our federal partners.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Bill Bazzi, Dearborn Heights:
++FULLY COVERED++
“Don’t drive through a flooded street, because you don’t know how deep it is. I actually saw a couple cars right now go for the same thing. It’s flooded. Stay away from it. They got stuck. We had to get a tow truck to get these vehicles out.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Bill Bazzi, Dearborn Heights:
++PARTIALLY COVERED++
“And we are frustrated ourselves here to see our residents frustrated. I’m trying to do everything we can. I go to Washington, D.C., quite often, trying to seek funding, federal funding, to help us out. It’s cheaper to do flood mitigation than to keep getting floods like you see right now causing more damage.”

STORYLINE:
A Detroit-area community is dealing with isolated street and basement flooding following heavy rains.

In Dearborn Heights, Michigan, water rose halfway up cars parked outside some homes.

“It’s very frustrating seeing this,” said Mayor Bill Bazzi (BA’-zee), who surveyed the flooded area Thursday. “Any water in our streets, standing water, is frustrating.”

Dozens of tornadoes and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Wednesday and early Thursday from Texas to West Virginia as storms hit those and other states.

The storms knocked down power lines and trees and ripped roofs off homes.

Forecasters say it was the opening act for a week of wild weather as daytime heating combines with an unstable atmosphere, strong wind shear and abundant moisture streaming in from the Gulf.
