"On election night, when we saw that Trump won, I turned to my business partner and husband and said, you know, I think we need to really think about a plan B. With more tariffs coming, we knew what that did for our business before. We looked at our business model here and thought that we need to outsource our manufacturing to a co-packer, which meant that three weeks ago we had to let 90% of our staff go. We gave notice to the Navy Yard. We will be letting go of our spaces. We will be running the business remotely. And seeing today the ‘Liberation Day’ global tariffs just makes me feel better about making such an unbelievably difficult decision."

STORYLINE:
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced major new tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners.
The decision put global trade at risk and raised fears of a wider trade war.
Annie Bassin and Allard Van Hoorn, co-founders of Annie’s Ginger Elixir’s in New York City, had weathered the tariffs of Trump’s first administration and decided to wind down their business in anticipation of the latest increases
They’ve outsourced their production and laid off the majority of their staff. Bassin said she felt vindicated in their decision after watching the president’s announcement.
Speaking in the Rose Garden, Trump said the tariffs were a response to what he called an economic emergency.
