"We’ve had ups and downs through the economic cycles, and we did have tariffs in 18 and 19 that we made it through, but nothing like what is being talked about this year."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Spencer, Houston Wine Merchant Owner:
"Most of my customers are in sympathy with us because they realize that we’re we’re being squeezed. They can make the decision just to stop buying. We can’t. I mean, we can, but it’s still our livelihood. It’s still it’s still all of the employees that we have here. The whole business that we built for 41 years is in jeopardy."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Gianola, Houston Wine Merchant, Manager:
"I don’t think we realize how much these things really affect us domestically. It’s not; I would say it’s just not. It’s not something that somebody else pays; It’s something that America pays. And American businesses and American employees are the people that end up suffering."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) David Reuss, Regional Wine Educator:
"Wine is a beautiful luxury product, but around the country, people are feeling the squeeze. So more. A higher price only makes it more inaccessible. People’s livelihoods are at stake. Their way of life is at stake, and even simple pleasure of drinking a glass of wine is now can be out of reach."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Gianola, Houston Wine Merchant, Manager:
"I’m not sure how we would have to pivot. I mean, I think we would continue to try and sell what’s in stock as much as possible. I’m not sure what other avenues may be stocking up on things that are already here and landed in the country so that they are not being tariffied versus new arrivals. Anything we have in Europe, like we do a tremendous amount of Bordeaux futures and those that are not yet delivered to the country, we would probably have them all held in Europe until the situation changes."

STORYLINE:
Long-threatened tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump have plunged the country into trade wars abroad — all while on-again, off-again new levies continue to escalate uncertainty.
“ We’ve had ups and downs through the economic cycles, and we did have tariffs in 18 and 19 that we made it through, but nothing like what is being talked about this year,” says Scott Spencer, Owner of Houston Wine Merchant.
Trump is no stranger to tariffs. He launched a trade war during his first term, taking particular aim at China by putting taxes on most of its goods. Beijing responded with its own retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products ranging from fruit to automotive imports. Meanwhile, Trump also used the threat of more tariffs to force Canada and Mexico to renegotiate a North American trade pact, called the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, in 2020.
