STORYLINE:
Residents in the Chilean capital, Santiago, are bracing for temperatures close to Zero Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) as temperature plummeted in what is considered the coldest May in the last 70 years.
During Wednesday’s early hours morning, the Chilean weather office reported the coldest morning of the year with -3 Celsius (26.6 Fahrenheit).
Wednesday’s low temperatures also broke the record for the longest cold spell in May in Santiago, and temperatures have been at its lowest since the 1950s.
Authorities have warned of possible snow showers, thunderstorms, and winds across Chile.
Civil Protection is preparing shelters for people experiencing homelessness.
