STORYLINE:
A major Japanese beef bowl chain, Sukiya, said it is shutting down almost all of its about 2,000 outlets across the country for four days beginning Monday to disinfect the stores after two incidents this year in which customers found a rodent and a bug in their meals.

Sukiya apologized to its customers for making them uncomfortable due to the incidents.

Japan’s largest beef bowl chain acknowledged that a rat was found in a miso soup served to a customer at one of its outlets in Tottori, southwestern Japan, and apologized over the case. It said investigation found that a rat must have entered inside of a refrigerator from a crack in its door.

In the latest incident, a pest was found in food at a Tokyo outlet on Friday, Sukiya said.

The Tokyo outlet where the bug, reportedly a cockroach, was found has since been temporarily closed.

Sukiya said it takes the second contamination “very seriously” and decided to carry out the nationwide cleaning of the outlets.

Sukiya, owned by a Japanese food industry giant Zensho Holdings, operates nearly 2000 outlets in Japan and about 660 stores overseas, including China, Singapore and Mexico.
