Anti-government protests in Turkey: With economic boycotts against Erdogan? | DW News

In an attempt to increase pressure on President Erdogan’s government, Turkey’s opposition has urged its supporters to boycott dozens of companies with alleged ties to the ruling party. Anti-government protesters also joined calls for a nationwide ‘no spending’ day.

The boycott campaigns follow the arrest of popular Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu over corruption charges last month, which sparked nationwide protests. Imamoglu has long been considered the strongest candidate to challenge Erdogan in elections scheduled for 2028. While the government has denounced the opposition-led boycott calls as a threat to the economy, many see them as a way to stand up for democratic rights and justice.
