"When Steppetti (Pope’s personal health assistant) asks me to go examine things with him, I go. We are in daily contact also because at Gemelli (hospital) we are helping the (Vatican’s) Health and Hygiene office that was represented here by Dr. Carbone (Dr Luigi Carbone, the Vice-Director of the Vatican’s healthcare service) and we are sending the respiratory physiotherapist, the physical therapist and all the individuals that are now needed for rehabilitation. So we have daily contact and we exchange information daily with Streppetti for the blood tests and therefore, in short, when needed, I go. Next week, it is expected that I will have to go back if needed. But now, more than a doctor following him, all the rehabilitation part is more important. The entire nursing rehabilitation part is now at home, no longer in the hospital. I found him in a much improved mood, he returned to his usual good mood with the jokes he makes and his voice surprised me because he was already at the level he was at before he was admitted."

"It will be necessary to see how he will recover his lung capacity, especially the right lung, where he already has a little less lung tissue because he had surgery and even the right diaphragm muscle, where he had been operated in his youth, moves less. So the right lung is the one that has been most affected by this infection. We’ll see how much oxygen he needs, or whether he’ll need oxygen which will be seen in the coming months."

"So he has returned to his good humor with his jokes and I think he is really, perhaps it isn’t nice to say this about the Pope, but I would say, sprightly, lively. Soon they’ll have to put a brake on him if he recovers so quickly, do you understand? But he really had some bad moments, so in short, he knows that he must fully recover in order to be able to go back to doing what he did before."
