"One of the beautiful things about Somalia, and Mogadishu in particular, is the kind of Sudanese community here. There are a large number of doctors and professors, and together, they form a complete Sudanese society in every detail. You wouldn’t believe it. Right now, I’m at the Sudanese community center, and we are about half an hour away from iftar. Every part of a traditional Sudanese Ramadan meal is available here, the warm welcome, meeting loved ones, breaking the fast with aseeda and balila (traditional dishes), even using the traditional ‘ibreeq’ (jug)."

"Today, we are at the five-a-side football field for the Ramadan tournament organized by the cultural sector of Sudanese community in Mogadishu. As you can see behind me, love brings us together. This is an annual event where teams play five-a-side football games. The Sudanese community here is large, we have around eight teams. The first round has ended, and today we are playing in the semifinals, the knockout stage."

"Our typical day is very long. (The activities) start after iftar. We break our fast at the community center, then we pray taraweeh (Ramadan nighttime prayers) there. Afterwards, we come to the five-a-side football game until 11 p.m., when our day ends. This is how we spend all of Ramadan, filled with beautiful activities. And it almost feels like you’re not in a foreign land. It’s also important to mention that many of our Somali brothers actively work and participate with us."

"Thank God, I arrived in Somalia and felt as if I were truly in my homeland, Sudan. Somalia resembles Sudan in so many ways — in the way of life, in people’s appearance, in their hospitality and so on."

"One of the most painful incidents was when I was at home with my family, and a massive ‘dana’ explosive (shell) fell on our house. It destroyed a wall, cut down trees and shattered doors. The entire neighborhood thought we had died. They rushed to us and found that we were all unharmed, thank God. But the psychological trauma was immense."
