STORYLINE:
A group of 20 children were being evacuated from Gaza on Wednesday to receive medical treatment abroad, a day after Israeli strikes across killed more than 400 Palestinians in the enclave.
Ahmed Abu Marzouq, the father of a child with a cancerous tumor on his kidney, said his son was among the children getting evacuated from the Gaza Strip to receive treatment in Italy.
"We took a sample and it turned out to be malignant. We had been waiting for him to be transferred abroad for treatment. It has been seven or eight months, my son has not received treatment," Abu Marzouq said.
"Thank God, we were informed three or four days ago about the travel date," he added.
The evacuation of the children comes one day after a surprise wave of Israeli airstrikes.
The Israeli military ordered people to evacuate eastern Gaza and head toward the center of the territory, indicating that Israel could soon launch renewed ground operations.
The Israeli strikes came after two months of relative calm because of a ceasefire.
During the truce that began on Jan. 19, several patients left the Gaza Strip to receive medical attention in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and other countries.
Aid groups warn supplies are running out two weeks after Israel cut off all food, medicine, fuel and other goods to Gaza’s 2 million Palestinians.
