STORYLINE:
China on Thursday again rebuked the U.S. for its criticisms of China-Russia relations as President Vladimir Putin embarked on his two-day trip to the country.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin denounced the recent U.S. accusations of Beijing’s economic support as “double standard” and “irresponsible,” citing the U.S. massive military supply to Ukraine.
China has significant influence as a key supporter of Russia following its military campaign in Ukraine.
It continues to supply Russia with key components that Moscow needs for its production of weapons, and its purchase of Russian oil and gas has helped boost the Russian economy.
Asked about the shooting of Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, Wang said the country was “deeply shocked” and “strongly condemns the violent attack.”
Fico was shot multiple times and gravely wounded after a political event in an attempted assassination on Wednesday.
He is in a stable but serious condition on Thursday, according to the hospital.
At the briefing, Wang congratulated Lawrence Wong Shyun Tsai for taking office as the new prime minister of Singapore and hoped for "new progress" in bilateral relations during his term.
Wong, a U.S.-trained economist, succeeds Lee Hsien Loong, 72, who stepped down after two decades.
